Good story, plenty of good ideas, dark necromancer and light magician are interesting BUT I had a feeling of constantly reading a synopsis for at least a three books series condensed in one book, short dialogs, short descriptions,... Plenty of great ideas but not really developed is why I only give 3 stars. I hope his next book is actually more develop. Really finished the book with a mixed feeling.Product details

Juxta Magi Geoffrey C Porter 9781497539044 Books Reviews
While I do agree with the 3 star rating's comments, I liked the fact that the book moved at a breakneck pace. I do agree that this could have been easily stretched to 3 or 4 books. I recomend this book to any fantasy lover that wants a quick fast paced read that will never be boring or dull. Also, unlike some other books, this book is well edited and flows nicely with its grammar structure.
Juxta, Magi by Geoffrey Porter is a fast paced novel about a boy who becomes a master wizard. Juxta becomes an apprentice to the wizard Hebron at an early age, and embarks on his training. Juxta is very talented, and soon he is battling alongside his friends William and Simon all manner of creatures with ill intent. One thing I especially liked about this book is the pace. Instead of creating tension and taking forever to resolve it, Porter creates plenty of tension but gets right to it. I found this refreshing. Overall, very enjoyable book which kept my interest the whole way through. I highly recommend it.
I'm a fan of fantasy literature and I actually really enjoyed this book. It was a fairly easy read, perfect to get my mind off my busy and stressful work. Full of mages and monsters, it was a great distraction!
An orphaned street urchin’s life is turned on its ear by one act of theft. He goes from convicted thief to mage’s apprentice when he shows just how quick-witted he truly is.
As he grows in the knowledge and power of this career, his new friends Simon and Prince William grow in their abilities as Rangers, trained for the defense of the kingdom.
It’s a good thing these boys-turned-men are good at what they do, for they encounter one problem after the other, most of which have to do with the powers of darkness trying to re-take a crown and sword that was once theirs.
Ogres, nymphs, necromancers, giant cats—these and more are the types of characters that the reader will encounter in this most exciting tale.
Great story! Such memorable, likable characters (well, the good ones, anyway; the nasties are merely memorable), with great rapport between them. I liked that Mr. Porter threw in a lot of humor in with the battles and tragedies. My favorite characters were the giant cats—bred for riding and supposedly loyal to only their own rider. Mmm-hmmm. Their true nature is definitely well-known to the author.
To someone who is a stickler for sentence structure, this book may be a challenge at times. I personally believe that the story overrides structure, and is well worth the time to read.
I look forward to reading more of Mr. Porter’s books.
Enjoyed the story right up to the point where the author obviously got tired of writing and gave it a lame ending, or a lame cliff for the sequel. 5 stars for imagination. Especially liked the giant cats
Not a bad story I liked it very much except the magic system seemed to be very weak. The author should relook at how he does his spell
I believe this story could have been separated in to at least 3 books. The author has a great story, great characters and all the right elements that you need to have a successful adventure and top tier series. The only problem is that he has crammed 3 books into one, and left out the DETAILS that truly separate the okay writers from the greats. While I don't particularly care for how beautiful every tree looks in a book, I do like to delve more into the minds of the characters, and the cultures and systems of magic. The author has pretty much skimmed over most details, this book takes you from childhood, to past his second apprentice as a master wizard, trips too hell, helping return the dragons and about 10 other things. It is simply too much for one book and the details need to be drawn out a little more. I however do not really mind this, and found it somewhat enjoyable to get a break from non-stop, non-relevant details. I would like however to see some more depth in future books, as I don't think the author should make it a habit.
I would say give it a shot, especially if you are in a little bit of a rut, want a good book but maybe don't feel like getting consumed by every little detail. This guy is a weapons simulations developer making war games(computer simulations). I can see how that might have given him a more direct approach to writing, if he let his artistic side out a little bit more I think he would have a 4-5 star book here!
